According to SBS Entertainment News korean actor So Ji-sub has officially stepped into the lead role in the upcoming Netflix series ‘The Square’, adapted from the popular webtoon. Speaking at the production press conference held on June 5 at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel, So Ji-sub shared his thoughts on being the top fan-cast for the role and finally bringing the character to life.
‘The Square’ is a 7-episode noir action drama about Nam Ki-jun (played by So Ji-sub), a man who severed ties with the criminal underworld by injuring his own Achilles tendon. After 11 years, he returns to uncover the truth behind his younger brother’s (played by Lee Joon-hyuk) death and seek revenge.
So Ji-sub expressed gratitude for being offered the role first, stating:
“I’ve always loved this genre — gritty, physical, intense. I was so thankful for the opportunity.”
Returning to action-heavy scenes for the first time in years, So Ji-sub emphasized the emotional depth behind his character’s quiet strength, saying:
“Ki-jun speaks with his actions and eyes, not words.”
Director Choi Sung-eun praised So Ji-sub’s casting, calling it “a dream come true” for fans of the original webtoon. The cast also includes Heo Joon-ho, Gong Myung, Choo Young-woo, Ahn Gil-gang, Jo Han-chul, Lee Beom-soo, with special appearances by Cha Seung-won and Lee Joon-hyuk.
With a star-studded cast, intense action, and rich storytelling, ‘The Square’ promises to deliver gripping noir thrills and visual spectacle.
‘The Square’ premieres exclusively on Netflix on June 6, 2025.
